Shared Shuttle or Private Transfer? Choosing Your Airport Transfer in 2027

Updated 8 min readAuthor: Mavi Transfer

The short answer: if you're travelling solo or as a couple and your resort sits on a shuttle line, a shared shuttle is usually the cheapest way out of the airport. If you're a family, a group, landing late at night, carrying golf clubs, or simply want to be dropped at the door of your villa, a private transfer tends to make more sense. Here's how each one actually works, a side-by-side comparison, real-life scenarios and a quick booking checklist.

How does a shared airport shuttle work?

A shuttle is a scheduled line: passengers heading the same way share one vehicle and each pays for their own seat. As of late 2026, Mavi Transfer's shared shuttle lines run between Dalaman Airport and Datça (both directions), Dalaman Airport and Kaş (both directions), Bodrum-Milas Airport to Datça, and Datça to Bodrum.

  • You book a seat on a specific departure. Pick a date, filter by morning (06–12), afternoon (12–18) or night (18–06), then choose a departure. The list often shows which airlines' arrivals each departure lines up with.

  • Per-person fares. Every seat is priced individually, and children under 2 travel free.

  • It leaves when the booked passengers are on board. It runs even if you're the only passenger.

  • Fixed drop-off stops, not hotels. On the Dalaman to Datça shuttle the drop-off points are Aktur, Karaincir, Billurkent, Reşadiye and the Mavi Transfer Datça stop. Not every departure calls at every stop, and the stops are not hotel or address drop-offs.

  • Luggage allowance: one large suitcase and one piece of hand luggage per person are included. Anything bulkier needs a note when you book.

  • Cancellation: free up to 6 hours before departure.

Heading east, the Dalaman Airport to Kaş shuttle picks up at the airport and drops at the Kaş stop. Flying into Bodrum instead? The Bodrum Airport to Datça shuttle boards in front of the café just outside the terminal exit.

How does a private transfer work?

With a private transfer, the vehicle and driver are booked for your party only. You're met at arrivals and driven straight to your hotel, villa or marina, with no detours for anyone else.

  • One fixed price per vehicle. The fare is set in advance by distance and vehicle class, so it doesn't change with the number of passengers as long as you fit in the car.

  • Flight monitoring. Add your flight number and the operations team tracks your arrival, adjusting the pickup if you're delayed.

  • Name-board meet and luggage help. You're greeted with a sign and walked to the vehicle.

  • Choice of vehicle. The fleet covers sedans (up to 2 passengers), minivans and business vans (up to 6), minibuses (up to 15) and midibuses (up to 25).

To put it in context: Dalaman Airport to Datça is roughly 167 km and takes around 150–165 minutes depending on traffic. On a private transfer that's door to door, with no stops for other guests and no hunting for a taxi at the end.

When does a private transfer work out cheaper?

The maths is simple: a shuttle costs more the more people you have, while a private car costs the same until it's full. So the gap narrows as your group grows.

A real example: in November 2026 the site showed ₺900 per person for the Dalaman–Datça shuttle, and an estimated private VIP fare from ₺5,500 on the same route. That starting price is for the smallest vehicle class; larger vehicles cost more. For two people the shuttle is clearly cheaper, but for a party of five or six the combined shuttle fares start to approach the price of a private vehicle. Compare both prices for your actual travel date, as fares change by season.

Don't forget the last mile either: the shuttle drops you at a stop, so if your villa is a few kilometres away you may need a taxi on top. Our guide to Dalaman Airport transfer prices explains how fares are worked out by route.

Which is right for you? Six typical travellers

Solo travellers

The shuttle almost always wins on price, especially if you're staying near a stop in Datça or Kaş. Just check there's a departure that fits your landing time.

Couples

Two shuttle seats usually come in below the starting price of a private car. That said, if it's a honeymoon, a late arrival or a boutique hotel well away from the stops, a sedan to the door can be worth the difference.

Families with young children

Being able to stop when the kids need a break, not having strangers getting on and off while a toddler sleeps, and having every bag arrive at the door in one go all count for a lot after a four-hour flight. With four people the price difference also shrinks, so for most families a minivan private transfer is the sensible pick. Request a child seat in the booking notes and ask for confirmation. Under-2s ride the shuttle free.

Groups of six or more

Here a private vehicle nearly always comes out ahead. Choose a minivan or business van for up to 6, a minibus for up to 15 or a midibus for up to 25: one vehicle, one price, one address.

Late-night arrivals

Some night departures do appear on the timetable, but there's no guarantee for every line every night. If you're on a late flight that's prone to delays, a private transfer that tracks your arrival is the safer plan. Our night transfer guide for Dalaman Airport covers the details.

Golf bags, windsurf kit and extra luggage

The standard shuttle allowance is one large case plus hand luggage per person. Golf bags, bikes or windsurf gear may be accepted depending on the departure and vehicle, but must be noted at booking. On a private transfer the luggage limit depends on the vehicle, so the easy fix is to go up one vehicle class.

Meeting at Dalaman Airport: same desk for both

Whichever you book, once you've collected your bags head to Mavi Transfer desk no. 4. The team checks your booking and takes you to your vehicle; private transfer guests are also met with a name board. For directions with photos, see our Dalaman Airport pickup point guide.

The return trip: hotel to airport

Going home works a little differently. On the shuttle you again pick a listed departure, and the site recommends taking one that leaves at least 4 hours before your flight. On the longer Datça–Dalaman or Kaş–Dalaman lines, that can mean a very early start for a morning flight, so check that a return departure suits your flight time before you commit to the shuttle both ways.

With a private transfer you set the pickup time around your flight and the car comes to your door. For timings at the terminal, see how early to arrive at Dalaman Airport. Plenty of travellers mix and match: shuttle out, private car home, or the other way round.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the stop is your hotel: shuttle stops aren't address drop-offs, so check the distance on a map first.

  • Not declaring luggage: golf bags or a pushchair that aren't noted at booking can cause space problems on the day.

  • Booking the vehicle right at its limit: six people with six large cases will be far more comfortable one class up.

  • Leaving out the flight number: without it, the team can't adjust for a delay.

Quick booking checklist

Booking a shuttle

  • Choose the departure that fits your landing time and enter your flight number.

  • Decide which stop you'll get off at and check how far it is from your accommodation.

  • Add a note if you have more than one large case and one hand luggage each.

  • Wait for your seat confirmation.

  • Remember free cancellation closes 6 hours before departure.

Booking a private transfer

  • Pick the vehicle class for your headcount and luggage; if in doubt, size up.

  • Give the full address: villa name, complex block or marina pontoon.

  • Add your flight number so delays are picked up.

  • Put child seats or any extra stop in the notes and get them confirmed.

  • Consider booking your return at the same time.

The bottom line

If budget comes first, there are only one or two of you and you're staying near a stop, the Datça or Kaş shuttle does the job well. For families, groups, late arrivals, bulky luggage or door-to-door comfort, go private. Enter your travel date and both prices appear instantly. Heading to Datça? Put the shuttle fare next to the Dalaman to Datça private transfer price for the same day and let the numbers decide.

Frequently asked questions

Does the shared shuttle drop you at your hotel?
No. The shuttle stops at set drop-off points along the line, and these are not hotel or address drop-offs. For door-to-door travel you need a private transfer.
How much luggage can I take on the shuttle?
One large suitcase and one piece of hand luggage per person are included. Golf bags or other bulky items must be noted when you book.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
On a private transfer your arrival is tracked via your flight number and the pickup is adjusted. For the shuttle, add your flight number or delay information to the booking form so the team can meet you.
Do babies pay on the shuttle?
No, children under 2 travel free on the shared shuttle.
Can I cancel a shuttle booking?
Yes, cancellation is free up to 6 hours before the departure time.
Is a private transfer cheaper for a family of four?
Not always, but the gap narrows because shuttle fares are per person while a private car has one price. Compare both for your exact date before booking.
